Change Your Virgin Media IP Address

The Virgins say that you have a dynamic IP address when you sign up for their services, although this is only partially true. Your IP address can technically change, however they distribute their IP addresses based on the MAC address of the router their modem is connected to (or the hub if you're using the hub as both a modem and router). Therefore, your IP address only changes by either chance during one of their infrequent maintenance periods, or once you get new hardware from them, which is uh an interesting ordeal to say the least.

This is great for if you are running some sort of public facing server without a system such as No-IP set up (although that is what I use for my servers) as it means that your public facing IP address will likely not change, however this can be annoying for if you happen to do want to change your IP address. Unfortunately, there didn't appear to be any guides on how to change your Virgin Media IP address online as the general answer was "get new hardware lol".

I however found a useful strat that puts the Virgins in their place, get yourself a cheap seperate router that allows you to spoof the MAC address of said router to network devices (a fairly common feature even for lower end cheap routers), and simply spoof said MAC address to the hub itself. This will cause the Virgin's systems to distribute you a new IP address and then lets you get on with your day, you can even switch back to your old hardware and as long as you don't spoof a different IP address, your IP address should stay changed to what it was.
